The Connecticut Legislature has adjusted the birthdate cutoff for kindergarten enrollment. Starting with the 2024-2025 school year, children must turn 5 on or before September 1 to be eligible for kindergarten. Previously, the cutoff date was January 1. A child who does not meet the cutoff may still be admitted to kindergarten pursuant to Public Act 23-208 upon (1) a written request from the parent or guardian and (2) an assessment completed by the school that determines admitting the child to kindergarten would be developmentally appropriate.
Determining developmentally appropriate skills and behaviors for kindergarten is a complex process. As we look ahead to the 2026-2027 school year, families wishing to register a child who turns 5 after September 1, 2026, can do so by completing the online waiver request.
If your child turns 5 on or before September 1, 2026, you DO NOT need to complete this form.
Once you complete the waiver, your school principal will contact you to schedule your child’s assessment. Assessments will be held monthly, starting January 2026 through August 2026.
