Learn to Draw, Paint & Compose in this course designed to introduce you to what the art department has to offer.
Drawing
Come learn to draw! These classes are designed for all students to develop skills in observational drawing, the foundation of all art areas. Students looking to advance their studies in Drawing can continue with Drawing 2 and Drawing 3. Drawing 3 is a UCONN ECE course that allows student to submit a portfolio to earn 3 UCONN credits upon completion of the course. Windsor High School's Drawing program focuses on traditional observational drawing concepts and methods that prepare students for submitting portfolios to competitive art schools around the country.
Painting 1 & 2
Requires Drawing 1 as a Prerequisite) Explore color and technique through various painting media in order to develop your voice as an artist. These courses are designed to explore composition, media, techniques, color theory, and thematic concepts in relationship to painting. Those wishing to pursue painting and develop a portfolio in this area may continue on in Pre-AP and AP Studio Art in order to earn college credit.
AP & Pre AP Studio Art
Passionate students looking to further their pursuits in advanced art classes are encouraged to enroll in our AP Studio Art program beginning with Pre-AP Art their junior year. During Pre-AP Art, students complete the first half of the AP Studio Art Exam as they prepare pieces in their chosen portfolio area: Photography, 2D Design, Sculpture, Ceramics or Jewelry Design that explore concepts including Community, Identity, Social Justice and Metaphors in Art. Senior year, students enter AP Art in order to complete the second half of the AP Studio Art exam where they each design their own investigation and write essential questions that will guide their artwork as they develop a portfolio that can be viewed as a visual essay and submit both parts to the AP Studio Art exam to earn college credit.
Jewelry & Metalsmithing
Work in metals, acrylic & wood as you learn to design, manufacture and finish jewelry pieces using traditional & digital tools. The Jewelry Design program at Windsor High School is taught in our metalsmithing studio where students learn to pierce, cut, hammer, forge, anneal, solder and polish metal. In addition to these traditional methods, students in Jewelry Design 1 are introduced to the role of CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) in production jewelry and have an opportunity to laser print one of their designs in our FAB lab. Students wishing to continue in this area can take Jewelry Design 2 which introduces more advanced metalworking techniques, including stone setting, and has students return to the FAB lab to 3D print one of their designs. Students wishing to pursue developing a portfolio in Jewelry Work can continue in Pre-AP Art and AP Studio Art where they will submit a portfolio of their jewelry work to the AP Art exam in order to earn college credit.
Sculpture 1 & 2
Consider the role of structural engineering in the design of artwork as we solve creative problems. The sculpture program at Windsor High School focuses on students' understanding of spatial relationships through the manipulation of 3-dimensional media. Sculpture 1 begins with traditional techniques such as carving and wire-working and materials such as paper, plaster and foam. As students advance to Sculpture 2, so do the materials - such as working with bronze - and concepts, as they are encouraged to now convey messages and stories with their work. Students looking to continue in sculpture can move on to Pre-AP Art and AP Studio Art where they can complete a sculpture portfolio for the AP Art Exam and earn college credit.
Ceramics
Learn how clay has served as a major area of technology for centuries as you use it to create innovative responses to contemporary design challenges. The Windsor High School Ceramics Program focuses on the sculptural potential of clay as it introduces basic ceramic hand-building techniques in Ceramics 1, continues with more advanced techniques and an introduction to the potter's wheel in Ceramics 2 and allows students to explore more conceptual and personal sculptural work in Pre-AP Art and AP Studio Art in order to build a portfolio in Ceramics to submit for their AP Art exam in order to earn college credit.
