The Connecticut Legislature has adjusted the birthdate cutoff for kindergarten enrollment. Starting with the 2024-2025 school year, children must turn 5 on or before September 1 to be eligible for kindergarten. Previously, the cutoff date was January 1. A child who does not meet the cutoff may still be admitted to kindergarten pursuant to Public Act 23-208 upon (1) a written request from the parent or guardian and (2) an assessment completed by the school that determines admitting the child to kindergarten would be developmentally appropriate.

Determining developmentally appropriate skills and behaviors for kindergarten is a complex process. As we look ahead to the 2026-2027 school year, families wishing to register a child who turns 5 after September 1, 2026, can do so by completing the online waiver request.

  • If your child turns 5 on or before September 1, 2026, you DO NOT need to complete this form.

  • Once you complete the waiver, your school principal will contact you to schedule your child’s assessment. Assessments will be held monthly, starting January 2026 through August 2026.

If your family needs food assistance due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, please get in touch with your child's school. Through the Office of Family & Community Partnerships (OFCP), mini food banks were established in every school to provide short-term support for families in need.

Please note that there are no changes to student meal benefits as a result of the State SNAP benefit shutdown. Students will continue to receive school meals as usual, and current meal benefits will remain in place through the normal 30-day rollover period into the next school year.

We are also partnering with Weekend Wheels, a local program that provides additional food assistance to Windsor families. You may request their support directly by calling Windsor Social Services at 860.285.1839 or by visiting LP Wilson Community Center. Additionally, you may contact the Family Resource Coordinator at your child's school.

For additional local resources, please visit the Town of Windsor SNAP & Food Resources page or contact the Windsor Food & Fuel Bank.

As always, Windsor Public Schools remains committed to supporting our students and families. Together, we can make sure every child has what they need to thrive.
