Winter Carnival! Come join the fun!

The Connecticut Legislature has adjusted the birthdate cutoff for kindergarten enrollment. Starting with the 2024-2025 school year, children must turn 5 on or before September 1 to be eligible for kindergarten. Previously, the cutoff date was January 1. A child who does not meet the cutoff may still be admitted to kindergarten pursuant to Public Act 23-208 upon (1) a written request from the parent or guardian and (2) an assessment completed by the school that determines admitting the child to kindergarten would be developmentally appropriate.

Determining developmentally appropriate skills and behaviors for kindergarten is a complex process. As we look ahead to the 2026-2027 school year, families wishing to register a child who turns 5 after September 1, 2026, can do so by completing the online waiver request.

  • If your child turns 5 on or before September 1, 2026, you DO NOT need to complete this form.

  • Once you complete the waiver, your school principal will contact you to schedule your child’s assessment. Assessments will be held monthly, starting January 2026 through August 2026.

For additional information about preparing your child for kindergarten, please see the links below:

Please do not hesitate to reach out to your building principal if you have any questions.

This message is being sent to the WPS Community on behalf of the Windsor Board of Education. After nineteen years of serving the Windsor Public Schools community as Vice Principal, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Terrell Hill has decided it is time to pursue new endeavors.Accordingly, Dr. Hill has submitted his resignation of employment, effective July 1, 2026, which has been accepted by the Board of Education. The Board of Education will promptly determine next steps to identify a successor superintendent for the period commencing July 1, 2026. During his tenure, Dr. Hill led the district through the Covid 19 pandemic, and to greater levels of academic performance. The Windsor Public Schools have truly thrivedunder his leadership. The members of the Board thank Dr. Hill for his passion and for the many contributions he has made on behalf of students, staff and parents over his years of serving ourschool system. The Board wishes Dr. Hill all the best for the future.
