What is the Seminar Program?

The Seminar Program at Windsor High School is the academic talent development program.  It is based on “The Schoolwide Enrichment Model” designed by Drs. Joe Renzulli and Sally Reis of the University of Connecticut.  It is designed to enrich and support students who have above average ability in any subject, are creative thinkers, and have high levels of task commitment.

The program has two basic parts.  One is comprised of High Honors level classes in one or several of the four main subject areas.  The other is the “Seminar Component”.

What is “the Seminar Component”?

The Seminar Component is a class designed to help highly able students to develop their talents more fully.  There are three levels of Seminar:  Seminar I for freshmen, Seminar II for sophomores, and Seminar III for juniors.  These courses use an enrichment approach as opposed to an acceleration approach and  have a  content applicable to all areas of study.

Seminar I

          • Creativity

          • Research

          • Respect

          • Ethics

Seminar I focuses on students’ ability to become creative problem solvers, develop research skills, develop respect for their fellow human beings, and to become ethical leaders.

Seminar II

            • Leadership

Seminar II curriculum is designed to help students discover their individual leadership skills and talents.  Students will identify qualities of leaders, develop communication skills, identify powers used by leaders, and participate in “team building” activities.

Seminar III

            • Service Learning

            • College Board

            • Career Cruising

            • SAT Prep

            • Social Justice

            • Current Issues

            • Individual Interest

The focus of  Seminar III is to help students put the knowledge acquired from Seminar I and Seminar II into action.  Seminar III requires a service-learning project.

Summary

High Honors courses, in conjunction with the Seminar Component, offer Windsor High School students opportunities to learn, discover and excel.  Today's students are tomorrow’s leaders.
