Curriculum at Windsor High

Windsor High School is a comprehensive high school that offers students in grades 9-12 a wide range of academic and co-curricular options. More than 200 courses are offered at Windsor High School, which operates on a block schedule in which classes meet on alternate days for 84 minutes each, with four blocks in each day. Core curriculum classes in English, mathematics, science and social studies are enhanced by academic offerings in art, business education, family and consumer science, music, physical education and personal development, technology education and world languages.

Courses are offered at multiple levels. The school offers 17 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, including offerings in biology, English language, Spanish, computer science, U.S. history, chemistry, English literature, French, calculus, psychology, comparative government/politics, physics, art, music theory and statistics. Students can also earn college credit by enrolling in any of the six courses in the University of Connecticut Early College Experience Program or through the Tech Prep program offered in cooperation with Capital Community College and Manchester Community College.

Windsor High School is a facility designed to support a rich curriculum that meets the needs of today’s students. For instance, a television production program is offered in a fully equipped production studio, where students become adept in using the tools and processes of television broadcasting and use their knowledge to produce newscasts and videos for the school. The library media center serves as a research and technology hub of the school by providing instruction in information skills, an up-to-date book collection of almost 25,000 volumes, a rich selection of periodicals and approximately 60 computers for student use. An on-site childcare center provides valuable experience for students interested in early education. Physical education facilities (including an indoor pool) and art, music and technology education classrooms occupy spaces specifically designed to provide appropriate environments for learning in those subjects.

All students at Windsor High School have an assigned guidance counselor, who is available to help in areas such as course selection, college and career planning, problems related to school and identifying abilities, interests and aptitudes. A Career Resource Center offers an array of resources for college and career exploration, including a library of college and other catalogs, scholarship information, information on military options and computers for online college and career-related searches. A full range of special education and support services is available to students as well, with special education services based on recommendations of the local planning and placement team.
