Rivers:
A lyrical flow
Here is what we need to know,
First lets look at how a river flows.
This depends on whether it is fast or slow?
Steep slops and a river moves fast
Carrying eroded materials en masse
And with this large volume is a large load
Quickly we see the land erode.
Formations appear like V-shaped valleys, rapids, & waterfalls
But that all changes as the water stalls.
We see that when water slows down
On low slopes on nearly flat ground,
In these areas we will find flood plains
Where over time the river’s course will change;
Over a million years or so, take a gander,
Notice the loop-like bends form on the meander.
They these get cutoff and we’ll have an oxbow lake;
All rivers work the same, make no mistake.
When the rivers slows down to a near crawl,
Then the sediment in the load begins to fall.
We say that this sediment is deposited
Just like our clothes when they need to be closeted.
Alluvial fans and deltas form out of this deposition
As the soil and sediment found its new position:
Alluvial fans occur at mountain bases
While deltas are where rivers meet oceans and lake-like places.
From this poem we know see how a river runs through it,
But you probably are seeing that you already knew it.
If you can this poem, then I may suggest,
In fact you know this material for your upcoming test.
