History, despite its wrenching pain,
Cannot be unlived, and if faced
With courage, need not be lived again. – Maya Angelou

Background: In order to provide you with the necessary background of the Holocaust, you will become a Holocaust expert.  You will teach the class necessary information about the Holocaust to insure that the class fully understands the significance of the Holocaust and its relation to the themes of Maniac Magee that we are currently studying:

Ø     People’s interpretation of truth and fact is shaped by experiences.

Ø     Ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

Ø     Prejudice comes in many forms.

Task:  Using the information located under Grade 6, Team One, at www.windsorct.org/sagelmc you will research the Holocaust by taking a webquest of the topic using various links.  Using the information on the various sites, you will create a scrapbook of the Holocaust, specifically focusing on “Overview of the Holocaust” and “Survivor Stories.”   Also…

Ø     Independently, you will also research Lodz Ghetto using not only the Internet, but also print materials found in the Sage Park Library.

Ø     The last section in your scrapbook will be a journal entry (at least one page) answering ONE of the following questions:

o       Look at the themes above, which one best applies to your study of the Holocaust? Why? (Be sure to give specific examples)

o       What lessons have you learned from reading the information on the Holocaust and your reading of Maniac Magee?

Ø      Once the scrapbook is created, you will then present your scrapbook to the class in a mini-presentation.  Feel free to bring in other materials (picture, books, etc.)  to enhance your presentation.

Audience:  Your audience is the class. However, keep in mind that people create scrapbooks of personal events.  Be sure to include personalized stories and make sure that you approach the topic from a personal, rather than historical, point of view.

Purpose:  The purpose of this activity is to educate the class about the Holocaust era.  Through the various topics, the class will learn background that will help them to better understand the themes of Maniac Magee.  Also, it will personally prepare you for the theme and concepts of The Cage.

Procedure:

1.       Research your topic using the specific Internet links and/or other library materials.

2.      Compile your information and create your scrapbook:  You will have at least four sections:  Overview of the Holocaust, Survivor Stories, Lodz Ghetto, and Journal Response.  Questions should be answered in complete sentences and at least half of the entries should be typed.

3.    Create your final copy. Be sure to spell-check your piece.
