Poquonock School serves a
diverse student body that
represents the diversity
of our community. Our goals are to involve
the entire learning community in school decisions,
challenge all learners, and have all students working on/above
grade level by the end of elementary school. We also seek to provide our
students with powerful learning opportunities and
strategies for learning that will encourage them to
become lifelong learners. Our belief in
"empowerment with responsibility" is definitely
a hallmark of our school.
The
core curriculum is enhanced by the visual arts, music
(vocal, band, and string), and physical education. Our
library media center has over 9,000 volumes and is staffed
by a full-time library media specialist with
paraprofessional assistance. Classroom and library
computers are networked and have access to the Internet
and email. Language arts teacher leaders, a math teacher
leader reading support staff/tutors and learning center
teachers provide additional support to ensure student
success. We also have the support of a social worker,
psychologist, and speech/language clinicians.
We have numerous
opportunities for children to grow and expand their
interests. Inquiry teams support student exploration in
leadership, movement, drama, science and more. Band,
strings, art and chorus are options for our students to
explore the creative world of music.
