COLD WAR

scramble.jpg (18353 bytes)   The second half of the course begins with the continent of Africa, with the focus on South Africa and Nigeria. The transition of South Africa from a white-dominated government to one of national unity with blacks having their rightful place, is certainly worthy of study; that such change could be done relatively peacefully is an additional point to be considered. Nigeria, the most heavily populated country on the continent, has her own political, economic and social problems that must be understood in the context of the 21st century.

The second unit is Russia, an amazing country and people. The unit starts with Czar Nicholas II and the collapse of the Romanovs, continues through Lenin and the Bolshevik Revolution, Stalin, the Cold War, and finishes with Russia today. The plight of the average Russian is always foremost in this unit, as it is they who will ultimately decide the fate of their country.

The final units are chronological, starting with World War I, the rise of fascism, and World War II. The wars are done from the world perspective, not that of the United States, thus balancing the coverage of those topics in U.S. History.
