As one of our closest allies in Asia, Japan is a most worthy unit of study. The transformation of this island nation from an isolated empire ruled by shoguns to one of the foremost powers in the world is truly fascinating. The fact that the Japanese people have moved along this journey while keeping much of their cultural heritage intact is an added source of wonder. Whether they can maintain their economic status in the world in the future remains to be seen; the aging of their population, the increasing demands on their economy and the rising power of their neighbors are all issues of concern for them and for us.
