There are predictions that India's population will outstrip that of China in the next few decades, certainly a cause for interest in this South Asian nation. Again in this unit, the influence of religion and culture on the contemporary actions of a nation will be a focus, as will the impact on the world of India's great nonviolent spokesman, Mahatma Gandhi. The British presence on the Indian subcontinent has created a society that often seems very European, but nationalistic forces are at work in this country as well and the chronic weakness of the parliamentary system is evident in this nation which has tested nuclear weapons. For these and other reasons, the impact of this country cannot be discounted.
