School Improvement Plans and Activities

At Oliver Ellsworth School the school day is divided into four academic areas.  Ninety minutes are devoted to Reading instruction, 75 minutes for Math, 60 minutes for Writing and 30minutes for reading and activities in the areas of Social Studies and Science. Students participate in nine classes of Art, Physical Education, Media, and Music throughout each ten -day cycle. A math lead teacher and two reading specialists assist and support teachers in their lesson planning and instruction. Reading instruction is delivered to fluid groups of students functioning on the same instructional level. All instruction is data driven and formative and summative assessments are regularly given.

The school improvement plan was designed by studying data and then implementing strategies and interventions to move students upward in their achievement levels. Tutoring for all students achieving below grade level and parent workshops in the areas of reading and math were held. Celebrations of academic and social successes were held. Data was updated regularly and instruction was modified as a result. Professional development for teachers was provided to support the teaching and learning. Teachers’ goals for the school year focused on identifying students below grade level and implementing interventions to move those students closer to goal for their grade level.

Oliver Ellsworth School now has four special education teachers that plan, modify and extend students’ learning. Special education teachers meet daily with classroom teachers to plan instruction, and they support all students within their regular education classrooms. Differentiation of instruction is the focus for each student.

This year we have implemented a Wellness Plan at Oliver Ellsworth School to promote a healthy school environment. We believe that by providing students with nutritious choices wherever food is available, school can positively influence children’s eating habits. A “Good Mileage Club” was enacted this year, in which students monitored and maintained records on the number of miles they walked during each recess period on the playing field behind the school.
