ESSENTIAL SKILLS PROGRAM INFORMATION


COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

ABE - ADULT BASIC EDUCATION

This course is designed to assist English-speaking adults in basic reading, writing, mathematics, and everyday life skills. This program can prepare students for the GED preparation program. (Windsor residents only) 

 

AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP

Citizenship studies are aimed at broadening the students’ appreciation and knowledge of the cultural heritage and traditions of the United States. Students will be assisted in preparation for obtaining their citizenship. (Windsor residents only)

 

ESL - ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

This course is specifically geared to those whose primary language is other than English. It provides an opportunity to gain skills in written and spoken English. Conversation, grammar, pronunciation, and composition will be included to meet the individual needs of the student. Textbooks require a refundable deposit of $25.00. (Windsor residents only)

 

G.E.D. - STATE HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY

This course helps students prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program, which may lead to a state high school diploma. It reviews the fundamentals of Mathematics, English, Social Studies and Science. Textbooks require a refundable deposit of $20.00. Persons sixteen years of age or older who are not attending regular school are eligible for this program.  (Windsor residents only)

 

WHAT IS THE G.E.D.?

The GED test series is designed to offer students age 17 or older an alternative route to a high school diploma.  The test series consists of an English Writing Skills Test, Social Studies Test, Interpreting Literature and the Arts Test, Science Test and Mathematics Test.  Students take these exams from the State of Connecticut.  Tests are given monthly throughout the year.  To register for the GED Test Series, please call the Adult Education office at 687-2000, ext. 271.

WHO CAN TAKE THE G.E.D. TEST?

In order to register for the GED examination, an individual must be 17 years of age or older and no longer enrolled in school.  Applicants 17 and 18 years old must submit documentation that they have been withdrawn from school for at least six months prior to registration. Individuals with a disability who might require accommodations on the GED Test are encouraged to contact Ms. Marie Parr at 687-2000, ext. 273 at LP Wilson Community Center (Windsor Public Schools Central Offices).

HOW MUCH DOES THE G.E.D. TEST COST?

An applicant 21 years of age or older and a non-veteran must pay an initial fee of $13.00 to take the test.  The fee to retake or reapply for the test is also $13.00. Only veterans and applicants under the age of 21 are exempt from fees. 

FREE CHILD CARE

The Windsor Adult Education Program, in conjunction with The Poquonock Family Resource Center is offering free childcare for those parents enrolled in our Daytime Essential Skills courses.  You can register for this service during In-Person class registration. Children must be 5 years of age and under.
