Unified
Sports at WHS
Receives "Spirit
of Life Award"
Windsor High School
Unified Sports was
recently honored at
a dinner held at the
Aqua Turf on March
20, 2008. The
Unified Sports
Program was
established at
Windsor High School
by Principal Larry
Shea fifteen years
ago. Unified Sports
is a division of
Special Olympics
where special needs
athletes pair with
regular education
partners to play
competitive sports
with other Unified
Sports teams from
area high schools
such as soccer and
basketball. With
support from the
school, parents, and
volunteers, the
program has grown
and flourished under
the leadership of
Coach Andrew Giza, a
special education
teacher at WHS.
The Spirit of Life
Award was presented
to Windsor High
School for its
dedication to
providing
opportunities to
special
athletes. Only one
high school in the
state of Connecticut
is recognized for
this award each
year. The Windsor
High School Unified
Sports Program has
also been awarded
Michael’s Cups from
the Connecticut
Association of
Schools for
excellence in high
school athletic
programs for the
past three years.
The program has been
recognized for
participation,
commitment, and
outreach.
The special athletes
play in several home
games and
tournaments at
Windsor High each
year. As the Unified
Sports fans will
attest to, it is a
“feel good”
experience to watch
them compete and
have fun.
