“Lights, Action, Learn” was the name of the project
presented by four Clover Street School 5th
Graders at the April 2nd Technology
Exposition at the Legislative Office Building in
Hartford. Accompanied by teachers Meghan Cody and
Rebecca Zenczak, students Justin Eason,
Nyeemah Hightower, Thomas McAuliffe and Michelle
Nguyen not only showcased two of their digital
videos but also demonstrated how they used editing
software to produce this original media.

The Technology Exposition is an annual event sponsored by
the Connecticut Educators’ Computer Association to
highlight the vital role of technology in the education
of our state’s children. Schools apply in advance to
exhibit. This year Clover Street School was one of
twenty-nine schools selected for the event.
The Windsor project exemplified how students can develop
technology skills while deepening learning in curriculum
areas. In their video “Events of the American
Revolution” small groups reenact events in order to
teach classmates about what happened and why it was
important. Titles and notes slides were done for each
performance and DVD’s were created for home viewing. In
“Earth, Moon and Sun,” groups demonstrate how they
predicted the rotation of the three bodies and then
demonstrate what they learned after further research.
Among visitors was a crew from Channel 30 who interviewed
the Windsor students for an evening news feature on the
exposition, technology and the future of education.
Impressed with the work of the Clover Street students,
reporter Anjuli Porter commented that that their skills
were “very advanced and in fact, so advanced that these
kids could be the future of NBC 30 News.” |
